How to count link clicks without storing IP addresses

Published 2026-09-28

Link analytics has a reputation problem. Most tools built to count clicks also build a profile of the person who clicked, which makes the numbers hard to trust and the privacy policy awkward to write.

Counting does not require identifying. Hitechnine DeepLink counts clicks and unique visitors without keeping a record of who the visitor is.

Key Takeaways

  • Clicks and unique visitors are counted separately, so one person opening a link five times is not five visitors.
  • Unique visitors are recognised with salted hashes, not stored identifiers.
  • Location is kept only as a country code. Raw IP addresses are never stored.
  • Retention is a plan limit: 30 days on Free, 12 months on Pro and 24 months on Business.

What most link trackers keep

The usual design stores an address, a user agent and a timestamp, then joins them into a profile. That profile is what makes long-term, individual reporting possible, and it is also what turns a link into a tracking device.

The usual defence is that the data is aggregated and only used for reporting. It is a reasonable position, and it is still a record of identifiable behaviour sitting in a database.

Counting unique visitors without keeping an identifier

DeepLink counts unique visitors with salted hashes. The visitor is recognised within the reporting window, so a return visit is not counted as a new person, but no identifier that would point back at an individual is stored.

The practical effect: you can see that a campaign brought 4,000 unique visitors rather than 11,000 raw clicks, without holding the information that would let you pick out any one of them.

Location without an address

Location is stored as a country code. That is enough to answer the question people actually ask — which markets responded — without retaining the address the visitor arrived from. Raw IP addresses are not kept.

This is a smaller claim than "we track everything", and it is the more defensible one. If your own privacy page says you do not collect personal data, an analytics tool that quietly stores IP addresses contradicts it.

The numbers you still get

Removing the profile does not remove the reporting. A link reports clicks, unique visitors, trends over time, devices, in-app browsers, referrers and a live visitor map.

Devices and in-app browsers answer the question that most often changes a decision: whether a campaign is being opened inside Instagram or TikTok, where the platform decides what a link can do, or in a normal browser where a hand-off to the app is available.

Referrers answer the next one: which surface actually sent the traffic, rather than which surface you assumed sent it.

Retention, and why the plan matters

The Free plan keeps 30 days of analytics. Pro keeps 12 months, Business keeps 24. If you only ever look at last week, the free window is enough.

If you compare a release this year against the same release last year, you need the longer window. That is the real difference between the tiers on the analytics side, and it is worth choosing deliberately rather than by habit.

What you give up

Two things, honestly. You cannot follow one person across months of visits, and you cannot combine this data with other sources to build a cross-site picture.

For most music, label and product links, neither of those is what the reports are actually used for. The decisions come from the aggregate: which surface converts, which country responds, whether mobile traffic behaves differently from desktop.

For the other half of the measurement picture — what happens to a link that leaves the screen — see how QR codes should point at your link.

Getting started

Create a link, share it, and look at the numbers a week later. If the reports answer the questions you make decisions with, the privacy-first design has cost you nothing.
